On Software as a Service in the Wall Street Journal's SmartMoney Magazine

I was quoted in an article in the Wall Street Journal's SmartMoney Magazine today concerning the future of Software as a Service (SaaS).  This is a trend that has developed in the past four years and become a viable option for more and more functions to be provided over the Internet.  We even see SAP taking this strategy for delivery of capabilities to Small and Medium Enterprises with their recent Business ByDesign suite.  The basic idea is that you can avoid the heavy capital outlays up front and have immediate functionality akin to the features large corporations enjoy.

Unified Communications and ICT integration

How do you explain the tremendous hype and true excitement about the iPhone? It is not a particularly revolutionary device in that its features all already existed in various places. It's key is integration - simplifying and streamlining the complexity of communications today. People are willing to pay for any device that does this well. Imagine a device you could wear that would serve as an accessory when not needed and morph into a phone, camera or other device form when needed. This sort of device is being developed now in research labs (Here's the video.). This unification of communications as a goal of cell phone providers sets up the broader topic of unified messaging.

Unified messaging is a hot topic right now. It promises integration of telephone, email, and various other ICTs into one interface with unified search, storage, and topic cataloging of content.

What happens when computing processing and storage become fully virtual?

Lately, the IT world has been humming with a variety of acronyms and buzzwords as usual. We hear about SOA and ITIL as well as "virtualization." Here virtualization generally refers to the ability to separate the computational capabilities associated with a business process from specific servers or other hardware. In effect, grid computing in which any terminal on a given grid can access the functions available.

Identity Management

Identity Management is a real problem facing many firms right now. Most still grapple with it from the perspective of enterprise security, but many are beginning to realize that the security perspective in isolation leads to suboptimal design of collaboration and options for sharing and access. Enter network access policies and directory services. The space continues to grow. Top products are diversifying. Little guidance exists to understand this space and how to manage the tradeoffs inherent in the decisions.

Project management used to be well-characterized as managing timelines to complete fully-specified goals within budget. Sometimes this characterization is still adequate when we conduct maintenance or standardized projects. On the other hand, recognizing that projects are the main vehicle for innovating and implementing strategy in business today has led to some new thinking at the Emory Goizueta Business School.

Emerging Ideas in Technology Usage

This page will be hosting a variety of thoughts on how to use the emerging potential of new technologies. I have been collecting such ideas in a variety of places in the site, including new ideas from Utne and other topics looking at emerging technology and how to use it.

Presentation / Multimedia-Asynchronous Tools

As I watch the market for ICT innovations, I am noticing the long-hyped move toward integration and multi-media with interest. New tools such as Impress in the OpenOffice suite or Keynote from Apple are challenging the dominance of PowerPoint for encapsulated content. New services from Accela or Go-to-meeting for web-casting presentations, challenge more expensive tools from Centra or Web-Ex.

How Fast Can you Build a House?

Project Management requires careful planning of scope, schedule, and budget. This triple constraint guides management and allocation of resources. With modern techniques, we can speed up processes and jobs that used to take much longer.

So, how long do you think it might take to build a regular, 3 bedroom, 2 bath house?

Windows on an Intel Mac

As we continue to see Apple inroads into the Windows PC market, people keep looking for solutions for running the applications that are Windows-only on a Mac. I have faced this need for years. On the old systems (PowerPC G3-G5) we had options like SoftWindows and VirtualPC. With my G5 and 1.5 GB of memory, I can actually run Windows 2000 at about 50% speed using VirtualPC.
