Micromanufacturing at Home: 3D Printing is Coming of Age

ShareThis

For years, I have been teaching about the infusion of computing into sensory areas beyond sight and sound.  Today, we expect vibration mode on cell phones, and the iPhone has introduced the idea of gyroscopes and access to a rich array of sensors.  BUT, these are the tip of the iceberg.  They are the beginning of the public becoming comfortable with the idea that computing is going to interact with us through all of our senses.  One of the most interesting developments in this area is in the field of 3D printing.

Modeling: what we have yet to learn

ShareThis

This week Bill Gates noted that we need better modeling tools for software in order to solve some of the persistent and hardest problems facing the planet. I agree, but I would suggest to him that we not only need better tools. We also need better concepts and techniques for modeling. Som research on modeling human-machine systems by my friend Andrew has indicated that modeling techniques still lack meaningful representation in complex systems [1]. I have reviewed a number of papers this year analyzing Gantt charts and their capacity to improve project management. In each case, Gantt charts tend to get used as eye candy with no impact on improving project outcomes. The idea is to have a representation a group can use to jointly visualize complex data and understand it [2], but these current representations are still inadequate. So, simply making software that add digitizations of current concepts will not be enough. We need new concepts.

The Age of Design

ShareThis

I am marking this space to begin collecting my thoughts on the Age of Design. Future Shock, Network Nation, and Megatrends all predicted the information age. People would become information-empowered.

The Internet connects people today and offers access to pricing, regulations, other government and public documents, as well as tools for manipulating data and producing more information.

Flying Cars...

So, how long will it take for flying cars to be commonplace? Will they ever? As of this week, there is a viable flying car that will be on the market for under $200,000 in the near future.

What implications will this have f

Open Source Tools

ShareThis

I frequently try out and contribute to a variety of open-source online community-type tools including Mambo, Tiki-wiki, Drupal (a commercial version of Drupal = Acquia ), and Moodle. I have several currently installed and use some of them for testing out comparative features.

Several guides on the Web provide discussions of the various tools available. Wikipedia provides one of my favorite general lists here.

Unified Communications and ICT integration

ShareThis

How do you explain the tremendous hype and true excitement about the iPhone? It is not a particularly revolutionary device in that its features all already existed in various places. It's key is integration - simplifying and streamlining the complexity of communications today. People are willing to pay for any device that does this well. Imagine a device you could wear that would serve as an accessory when not needed and morph into a phone, camera or other device form when needed. This sort of device is being developed now in research labs (Here's the video.). This unification of communications as a goal of cell phone providers sets up the broader topic of unified messaging.

Unified messaging is a hot topic right now. It promises integration of telephone, email, and various other ICTs into one interface with unified search, storage, and topic cataloging of content.

Instant Messaging and Chat as entry tech

ShareThis

People love instant messaging and chat on the Internet. These are applications the new generation of millenials in particular have been bred to use. My research shows these are the entry technologies for the workforce to get into more advanced computing. Managers can take specific steps to use them to get employees using improved communications and collaboration practices. Of note in this space, there are a wide variety of clients. IBM and AOL were in this space a long time ago along with CUCME (pronounced "see you see me") and ICQ.
