Unified Messaging

Remote Surveillance and Data Mgmt is a huge issue for health systems

In the healthcare space, we are beginning to see huge investments in health information technology from the US Federal government influence the direction of development. Meanwhile, integrated clinical information systems at hospitals in the 1980s found huge challenges integrating data and providing a managerial value to the health providers. Indeed, they were deisgned to help the administrators with their analytics and quarterly reports to CMS or other regulartory bodies.

Portable Security and Control on the Horizon

touch screen USB deviceWe see interesting devices from time to time that prompt re-thinking the potential of how we behave and what we are able to do.  I saw an interesting USB key fob today that did just that.  It is a small device that will enable a person to carry files along with an identity and interaction method!  What does this mean?

Integrated communications are becoming more ubiquitous and profitable

Recently I have attended a number of symposia hosted by unified communications vendors including Microsoft, Google, and Siemens.  I have been impressed by the level of interest and dedicated effort going toward integrated multi-media solutions.  Presence is getting built in to backbone systems that can deliver/gather presence information from multiple mobile platforms, use geo-location data, translate between text / voice / video, and auto-incorporate organic groups of interest when topics emerge.  These tools will have an extraordinary impact on business in the future.

Unified Communications and ICT integration

How do you explain the tremendous hype and true excitement about the iPhone? It is not a particularly revolutionary device in that its features all already existed in various places. It's key is integration - simplifying and streamlining the complexity of communications today. People are willing to pay for any device that does this well. Imagine a device you could wear that would serve as an accessory when not needed and morph into a phone, camera or other device form when needed. This sort of device is being developed now in research labs (Here's the video.). This unification of communications as a goal of cell phone providers sets up the broader topic of unified messaging.

Unified messaging is a hot topic right now. It promises integration of telephone, email, and various other ICTs into one interface with unified search, storage, and topic cataloging of content.

Presentation / Multimedia-Asynchronous Tools

As I watch the market for ICT innovations, I am noticing the long-hyped move toward integration and multi-media with interest. New tools such as Impress in the OpenOffice suite or Keynote from Apple are challenging the dominance of PowerPoint for encapsulated content. New services from Accela or Go-to-meeting for web-casting presentations, challenge more expensive tools from Centra or Web-Ex.
