Social Media and Virtual Communities (old course number 659)

This is a course for the students with a strong interest in new technologies and how they may be used to create new business opportunities, particularly new social networking media.

Integrated communications are becoming more ubiquitous and profitable

Recently I have attended a number of symposia hosted by unified communications vendors including Microsoft, Google, and Siemens.  I have been impressed by the level of interest and dedicated effort going toward integrated multi-media solutions.  Presence is getting built in to backbone systems that can deliver/gather presence information from multiple mobile platforms, use geo-location data, translate between text / voice / video, and auto-incorporate organic groups of interest when topics emerge.  These tools will have an extraordinary impact on business in the future.

Social Media and Virtual Communities

This is a course for the students with a strong interest in new technologies and how they may be used to create new business opportunities, particularly new social networking media. Topics covered will include social networking and how the business world leverages them, virtual worlds and technologies, skills in designing and implementing social media for business value using sharepoint and iTunes U (hands on projects).

As Disney describes it, to some degree we will "imagineer" the future of business in this course... what would you do in business if anything were possible? Look at how highly Microsoft values the social networking and virtual community components of Yahoo! as a competitive factor against Google. Why? See comments from Ray Ozzie, Chief Software Architect at Microsoft. The future is integrated and collaborative. Look at how firms are now using Facebook, My Space, Linkedin, and other networking tools to improve knowledge flow and enable marketing and hiring processes. Where will these tools go next? There are already tools for specific communities, such as doctors, to share cases and best practices. They may even get paid for their contributions (see the medical portal Sermo as an example).

BUS 558 Project Management and Collaboration

Project management used to be well-characterized as managing timelines to complete fully-specified goals within budget. Sometimes this characterization is still adequate when we conduct maintenance or standardized projects. On the other hand, recognizing that projects are the main vehicle for innovating and implementing strategy in business today has led to some new thinking at the Emory Goizueta Business School.

Social Networking in the Workplace

Social networking is a critical necessity in jobs. Of the variety of benefits from social networking, research places retention, satisfaction, productivity, and learning at the core. As workplaces become increasingly digitized workers interact through computer media. In my own work with large systems development projects (teams of 10+, $600,000+/month budget) I have isolated tools and techniques being applied to create "digital water coolers" or spaces for social networking. This is a hot area.

Teaching Philosophy

I enjoy teaching. Two primary teaching beliefs drive my work as a teacher. An interested student may learn much more than the curriculum provides. I identify that student’s interest and provide opportunities for learning beyond the pro forma. Some students will be indifferent or more interested in other subjects, simply taking a class because of requirements and therefore, not so motivated or interested in learning.
