International standards for how ships log and exchange operational data

As Project Lead for ISO Technical Committee 8 (Ships and Marine Technology), I authored ISO 24060-1 (Ship software logging system for operational technology, 2021) and ISO 24060-2 (Electronic Service Reports, 2024), addressing how the global shipping industry logs and governs operational technology data with no single regulator. The research foundation for this work includes "The Necessity and History of Standards in Maritime Informatics," presented at AMCIS and developed into a chapter in the Springer volume Maritime Informatics, one of the field-founding texts in maritime informatics as an academic discipline.

Part of this work is now moving toward adoption within international law through a proposal before the International Maritime Organization, and has drawn KSU undergraduates into the standards process through directed studies.
