I am Dominic Thomas, a Professor of Information Systems who turns applied research into working technology — in healthcare, maritime standards, and public safety.
Philosophy
Technology alone is not enough
My work sits at the intersection of people and systems: a socio-technical approach that treats organizations, not just software, as the thing being designed. Over 25+ years of teaching and research, that philosophy has taken me from Peace Corps service in Nepal, to virtual-team research at Emory, to global disease-surveillance systems, to my current work applying AI to 911 mental health crisis response and digitizing the world’s shipping industry through ISO standards.
Across all of it, the throughline is the same: solutions only work if the people and processes around them are designed with the same care as the code.
